چکیده
Natural polysaccharides w ere exam ined for their activity as elicitors o f phytoalexins and flavonoids in alfalfa cotyledons. O nly tw o polysaccharides, lam inaran and pectic acid, had e lic itor activity. Laminaran, w hich was m ore active than pectic acid, was hydrolyzed by tunicase and the hydrolysate was subjected to charcoal and gel filtration colum ns. Introduction o f the pyridylam ino group into the elicitor-active o ligosaccharides w as attem p ted in order to facili tate isolation . T he pyridylam ino derivatives w ere found to exhibit higher activity than the original oligosaccharides. T heir liquid chrom atography m ass spectrom etry (L C -M S) analysis revealed that the elicitor-active principles form tw o ion clusters w ith the sam e m olecular weights, m/z 1070 and 1232. T heir high perform ance liquid chrom atography (H PL C ) analy sis show ed three main peaks. T he individual peaks (L N -1, 2, 3) w ere co llected and subjected to the alfalfa cotyledon assay. L N -3 show ed the highest activity (m inim um effective con cen tration, 0.8 jig/ml).

A minimum essential structure of LN-3 elicitor activity in bean cotyledons.
A great deal of an elicitor-active oligosaccharide (1.47 g) was obtained from 40 g of polysaccharide laminaran with the guidance of elicitor activity in the bean cotyledon assay. Physicochemical means suggested that the oligosaccharide was a beta-1,3- and beta-1,6-linked triglucoside. This was a partial structure of LN-3, having elicitor activity to alfalfa and bean. The triglucoside exhibited ...
متن کاملSeaweed Polysaccharides and Derived Oligosaccharides Stimulate Defense Responses and Protection Against Pathogens in Plants
Plants interact with the environment by sensing "non-self" molecules called elicitors derived from pathogens or other sources. These molecules bind to specific receptors located in the plasma membrane and trigger defense responses leading to protection against pathogens. In particular, it has been shown that cell wall and storage polysaccharides from green, brown and red seaweeds (marine macroa...

Background and purpose: Actinomycetes were always considered as a source of essential new antibiotic producers and secondary metabolite in pharmaceutical industries. This study aimed to isolate antibiotic producing actinomycetes from sediments of the Caspian Sea and investigate their potential as antifungal metabolites production. Materials and methods: Sediments of the Caspian Sea were collec...
متن کاملInduced Resistance in Solanum lycopersicum by Algal Elicitor Extracted from Sargassum fusiforme
Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) production relies heavily on the use of chemical pesticides, which is undesired by health- and environment-concerned consumers. Environment-friendly methods of controlling tomato diseases include agroecological practices, organic fungicides, and biological control. Plants' resistance against pathogens is induced by applying agents called elicitors to the plants and...
متن کاملUtilization of algal polysaccharides by human colonic bacteria, in axenic culture or in association with hydrogenotrophic microorganisms.
The ability of different hydrolytic bacteria from the human colon to grow on various algal polymers (carrageenans, Palmaria palmata xylan, ulvan, desulphated ulvan and laminaran) was investigated and the interactions between Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron and H2-utilizing microorganisms (one methanogenic archaea and an acetogenic bacterium) were studied during laminaran degradation. None of the a...
